Baumgartel Named a Top 3 Finalist

April 29, 2026

Miley Baumgartel is named a Top 3 finalist in the state for her Sheep Production SAE. She will find out the final results at the Kansas State FFA Convention at the end of May. Miley was selected as the Southeast District FFA Sheep Production Proficiency award winner in March.

Below is the description of Miley’s Project:

My Sheep Production SAE is an entrepreneurship project that focuses on producing both breeding and market lambs, and it has grown significantly from the beginning to now. When I first started, my operation was small and centered on learning the fundamentals of sheep management. I began by carefully selecting and purchasing breeding stock, researching genetics, and seeking mentorship from experienced producers. Early responsibilities included daily feeding, basic health monitoring, cleaning facilities, and becoming confident in handling and caring for my animals. As my knowledge and experience expanded, so did the scope of my SAE. The breeding portion of my SAE became more focused on genetic selection, detailed record keeping, and long-term flock improvement. I now track performance data, expenses, and income to guide management decisions and measure profitability. On the market lamb side, I concentrate on rate of gain, feed efficiency, and proper preparation for exhibition and sale. Marketing skills have developed through private treaty sales and auctions, along with communication with buyers. Non-cash exchanges such as shared labor, use of family facilities and equipment, and mentorship continue to support my operation. From a small beginning to a structured agricultural business, this SAE has strengthened my advanced animal management, decision-making, and agricultural business skills.
