Reading for Success!

November 12, 2024

Reading is imperative to everyday living.  Please set your student up for success!!

These are some tips to help you student maintain or become a better reader.

  • Make it fun

Make reading time interactive and fun. You can try reading outside, acting out a story, or having your child read to you.

  • Choose books

Pick books that are age-appropriate and interesting to your child. As your child gets older, let them choose their own books.

  • Make it a routine

Reading aloud to your child every day can help them become great readers and listeners. Try to read for 15 minutes a day.

  • Encourage discussion

Ask questions about the story and encourage your child to ask questions too. You can also ask open-ended questions to help your child relate to the characters and events.

  • Build vocabulary

Focus on and talk about new words. You can also play word games to help your child realize that reading improves their vocabulary.

  • Connect to real life

Link the story to your child's world or to life experiences. For example, you could read books about animals after visiting the zoo.

  • Take turns reading

If your child is old enough, they can take turns reading with you.

  • Keep books accessible

Keep books within reach so your child is more likely to pick one up and read.

  • Keep reading time short

Children can become frustrated if they get tired or lose concentration.

Happy Reading!!
