Minds at Work: Collaboration Before the First Page

If you walked into our classroom this month, you might have noticed students engaged in lively, focused conversations before opening a single page of their new text.
Before diving into our, students participated in a collaborative pre-reading activity designed to activate prior knowledge, predict key themes, and build enthusiasm for the material. Working in small groups, they exchanged unique perspectives, questioned assumptions, and refined their ideas together.
Beyond preparing students for the text itself, this activity directly aligns with ELA Standard 10.1 for Speaking and Listening. To meet this standard, students must initiate and participate effectively in discussions with diverse partners, actively build upon the ideas of others, and express their own thoughts clearly and persuasively. During this specific session, students had to all agree on three wishes the whole group would ask for if given the chance. This is a rather difficult task when you have a group with diverse backgrounds.
Seeing students listen attentively, build on their peers' insights, and communicate their reasoning with confidence highlights the value of collaborative learning. Be sure to check out the photos to see our students hard at work preparing for their next reading adventure!
