English Classes Wind Up the Year

May 05, 2025

With the rapidly approaching end of the 24-25 school year, 9th and 10th grade English students are in the midst of their final unit, Science Fiction.  They are reading classic works of fiction by Bradbury, Benet, and Asimov.  The great thing about reading these works, most of which were written in the 1950s and 1960s, is that they are set in what is now the present time.  Students are able to assess whether the writers were accurate in their predictions of the future or not. They can also determine what possible future events caused the most concern to readers at large when the stories were originally published.  Finally, they can evaluate whether those future events were worthy of the fear and stress they caused decades ago.

The students enjoy these stories and the accompanying videos, which offers an opportunity to end the school year on a high note.  The final essay that the students will write is a critique of the times of both the setting of the stories and the period in which they were written.  This enables them to assimilate all they have learned both in the genre of literature and their writing skills.  All in all, a great way to conclude the academic year!
