FACS and Business Management Students Thrive in 2025!!
February 24, 2025
The Business Essentials/Business Management Classes have been busy since our last update in the fall. They have spent many hours researching the different types of businesses, ethics, entrepreneurs, marketing, and so much more! We even took time to explore the invention of Heinz 57 Ketchup (ask your student what “Catsup” was and why it was used!), Hershey Chocolates, Mars Chocolates, Kellogg’s, Post, Birdseye Frozen Foods and Coca Cola. Our journey through the turn of the century (late 1800’s and early 1900’s) reflected many cutting edge inventions, robber baron behaviors, and questionable ethical behavior to produce the products we know and love today. The most important theme out of each of these stories? The people and their inventions were not successes overnight. There were years of trial and error, financial failure and adverse situations that caused the founders to rebuild from the ground up. It drove home the saying that Einstein was notably known for… “Failure is success in progress.”
Following Winter Break, we returned and hit the ground running! We jumped right into business creation, careers and we will begin the unit on employment skills soon! Exploration of careers and interests into possible employment opportunities have been in the forefront, attempting to research where the jobs are and education requirements noted and documented. They have been exposed to and worked on completing a “practice” job application, resumes, and cover letters. They also are making “Personal Reference Files” that they can carry with them for the remainder of their high school career and to either post secondary education or if they enter the workforce for a job. Valuable pieces of information can be tucked away in these folders for the students to quickly refer to at a moment's notice. We will also explore additional food stories such as McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, etc within the next month too.
Foods and Nutrition and Career and Life Planning students have logged several hours of cooking time in the FACS kitchen. They have been very excited to test their skills on various food items such as breakfast items, crispy Asian salad, Christmas Crack, Chex Party Mix, sliders, smash burgers, potato casserole, meatloaf, Russian Tea Cakes, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken alfredo, baked macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, mini pizzas using biscuit dough, mini pigs in the blanket, quesadilla, tater tot casserole, ham and green bean casserole, and many other culinary delights!! Both classes even assisted the Human Growth Development and Lifespan development classes in creating Christmas and Valentine gifts for every student at Marshall. Our next big culinary experience will be for the student to create the refreshments for the Junior-Senior Prom in April. This will give them a chance to share their talents and showcase their culinary skills for a “hospitality event”. We began planning the menu today and will add to it before Spring Break.
As was mentioned, the Human Growth Development and the Lifespan Development classes were assisted by the foods classes to create Christmas and Valentine’s gifts for all Marshall students. Each child was able to take home a Christmas ornament and for Valentine’s a “goody bag” with Valentine candy, a pencil, eraser, and some sort of Valentine item such as a bookmark, heart glasses, foam Valentine dogs, and either red or white decorated hearts. The high school students love being able to share these gifts and moments with the Marshall students. They look forward to making the deliveries and seeing the excitement and smiles on their faces when they see the big kids making deliveries!
Other activities that Human Growth Development and Lifespan Development have been experiencing are readying themselves to host a “Pre K” class for 3-5 beginning the week following Spring Break. The classroom activities since the beginning of our school year have lent themselves to ready the students to become “the teachers” during the 6 week pre-school. In addition to the students learning about children via textbooks, slideshows and videos, they spent two weeks traveling to Marshall each day during their class time to observe teachers, students, classroom activities, and other hands-on activities to help guide them for when it is their turn. Registration forms are being designed and will be available before Spring Break. The Pre-School is a big portion of their work and grade during the final quarter of the year. Students rate themselves and their experience as a teacher as well as their peers in the class will be rating their skills, activities, lesson plans, etc.
All students of Mrs. Perkins researched cold weather preparation when we returned from Christmas Break. This information allows the students to learn what items should be in their vehicles or their family’s vehicles before driving on the roads in extreme cold or wintery weather. It also is an opportunity for them to learn about ensuring pets are kept safe and warm when the North wind starts to blow and snow is flying! Great life skills that are important for them to know when they are adulting.
It’s hard to believe that we are almost ready to wrap up the 3rd quarter! This year has been a whirlwind! Looking forward to more learning opportunities as we get ready to embark on the final quarter!
