With hopes of promoting living in Southeast Kansas, high school film students throughout 17 counties in the southeast region produced videos in an effort to spread the word to others. Their goal, to let others know that “this is where you belong” or “you ought to come back to the area because great things are happening.”
Last Thursday, an announcement ceremony was held at the Southeast Kansas Education Center at Greenbush to announce the winners. The winning video entries were submitted by Eureka Junior Senior High School (EJSHS) and the Lucky Horseshoe 4-H Club, of Wilson County. Columbus High School received second place and Independence High School and Erie High School received honorable mention awards.
Winning videos were screened by the area school district Superintendents and students were then presented with their prizes. The prizes were three 3-D printers, one was donated by PITSCO Education, one was donated by the Southeast Kansas Education Center at Greenbush, and one was donated by Printrbot. The CEO of Printrbot is Brook Drumm an Altamont native. These 3-D printers will be given to Eureka Unified School District, the Columbus Unified School District and the Lucky Horseshoe 4-H Club has designated that their prize be given to the Neodesha Unified School District. Students expressed that they enjoyed showcasing why they love where they live, the pride they have in this region, and why others should consider moving to Southeast Kansas.
The EJSHS film class decided last fall to create a video highlighting many of the outdoor activities that the Eureka area has to offer, the laid back lifestyle and the sense of community. To do this they used a green screen and placed themselves in the hectic world of living in a big city. EJSHS senior Lexie Herb completed the majority of the editing
EJSHS students Herb, Rachel Lofton, Dustin White, Steven Vinson; teacher Mr. Scott Miller and Superintendent Randy Corns took a road trip to Girard to the awards ceremony, where they were awarded First Place and received a 3D printer for the school. “This is very exciting that our students will have an opportunity to learn and work with cutting edge technology,” stated Mr. Miller.
