4th Graders Enjoy the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve

October 20, 2024

Our 4th Grade students enjoyed a field trip to visit the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve which is located in the heart of the Flint Hills, just north of Strong City. Students were impressed to learn that Kansas does have five National Parks. The Tallgrass Prairie is one of them. The original owners purchased 160 acres to start the ranch. Additional acreage was purchased to get to 7,000 acres. It now consists of 11,000 acres with over 40 miles of hiking trails. We had the opportunity to go inside the 1880’s limestone mansion. It only cost $25,000 to build back then. We also toured the massive three story limestone barn that was built after the home. The barn was built for $15,000. Only 4% of the Tallgrass Prairie remains, the largest intact expanse of the prairie is in the Flint Hills of Kansas making it the most endangered ecosystem in the world. Special Thanks to the Greenwood County Cattlewomen’s for Sponsoring the You Are Here Agricultural Program. A fun day was had by all.
