2nd Grade is Off to a Strong Start!

September 08, 2024

Second graders are off to a strong start!  We have had a great start to the school year and are so happy to share our days with your amazing kids!

We use the Really Great Reading program to teach phonics and spelling. Each week we will have a new list of spelling words and Heart words for the students to study. Heart word checks are at the end of each quarter. Spelling tests with dictation sentences are given at the end of every week.

Our reading blocks consist of multiple components. The first 30 mins. consists of reading comprehension and vocabulary lessons. In the next block, we practice words, phrases, and sentences that aid the students in the fluency of their weekly All About Reading story. The final block is small group rotations. During these rotations students may be rereading for fluency with a teacher or para, working on Lexia, being progress monitored, or independent reading for AR.

In math, we completed and tested over graphing. Now we are currently working on metric measurement. We have also sent home math fact cards to improve fluency, this will help students with their sprints and classwork.

Technical writing is our current writing skill. We will be practicing writing “How to” papers all month. Then in October we will write our final “How to” paper.

We just completed and tested over our unit on Democracy and Government. Next up, we are starting our unit over Geography. Students will learn about the continents, oceans, and where they live in the world.

We are very excited about the many things we have planned in 2nd grade this year.  We look forward to getting to know you and your family.
