3rd Graders Explore Weather

March 06, 2024

Here in third grade we have been working very hard in science and we recently finished up with a unit about weather. One activity that went with our weather unit was a project of building a wind-proof house. The students had to first build a small paper house with a loose paper roof. They then made a small paper fan to act as the “wind” blowing their house.

To begin the activity, they first identified the problem, which is when they used the paper fan to blow their house, the house blew and the roof blew off. They were then given a few materials such as paper, paper clips, toothpicks and a couple of sticky dots. Using these materials, they were to try to create ways to reinforce the house. They added things to improve the stability of the house and drew a picture of what they added. They then tested the house by “blowing” the wind and recording what happened with the house. After recording their observations, they were given an opportunity to add materials to improve their house and test it again. They drew their additions to their houses, tested them again and wrote down their findings. They then compared the two designs they created and chose the best one, describing why that chosen design was the best.

The students really enjoyed learning about weather and weather patterns and this was fun activity to end our weather unit.
