Now that Halloween has ended, we are diving into our annual November activities here in third grade. For many years, our grade level has hosted a disguise the turkey contest where students are provided with background paper and a paper turkey. As long as they do not alter the shape of their turkey and mount it onto the background paper, they are allowed to use any materials with this at-home project to disguise their turkey so it does not get eaten for Thanksgiving Dinner! This contest has been such a fun tradition for third graders for many years and several of our students have siblings and even parents that remember participating in this contest.
It is always so exciting to see all of the creative ways that students and their families come up with to disguise their turkey. We are lucky and thrilled to have some local retired teachers come in each year to judge the turkeys and select a winner from each class. The students have to bring them in by Friday, November 10th to be considered for the judging. Our judges will be coming Monday, November 13th so, stay tuned to the Marshall Facebook page to see all of the entries and the winners who will receive a small prize purchased by their teacher! It is our hope that win or lose they will hold on to the memory of creating this project with their family.
Along with the disguise contest, we take time to create our thankful turkeys in school where students color and mount a turkey body to a poster and each day take time to write on a feather what they are thankful for and why. Once they color their feather and trace their writing with a dark marker, they will glue it behind their turkey to create the full picture. Every year we look forward to providing these opportunities to have fun and think of all the many things in life that we are thankful for!
