We're off to a Great Start!

We have had a great start to the school year and are so happy to share our days with your amazing kids! Here’s a look at what we are working on.
We use the Really Great Reading program to teach phonics and spelling. Each week we will have a new list of spelling words and Heart words for the students to study. Heart word checks are at the end of each quarter. Spelling tests with dictation sentences are given at the end of every week.
Our reading blocks consist of multiple components. The first 30 mins. consists of reading comprehension and vocabulary lessons. In the next block, we practice words, phrases, and sentences that aid the students in the fluency of their weekly All About Reading story. The final block is small group rotations. During these rotations students may be rereading for fluency with a teacher or para, working on Lexia, being progress monitored, or independent reading for AR.
In math, we completed and tested over graphing. Now we are currently working on metric measurement. We will also practice basic math facts using flash cards and Reflex Math to improve fluency, this will help students with their sprints and classwork.
Informational writing is our current writing skill. We will be practicing this skill all month. Then in October we will write our final informational paper.
This month for social studies we are working on our geography unit. In October we will begin the science unit Animal Adventures.
We are very excited about the things we have planned in 2nd grade this year. We look forward to getting to know you and your family.
