Nutrition and Wellness

February 04, 2024

Students learned about nutritional labels and how to read them. They learned to use food labels to determine nutritional needs. We talked about what areas of the label to focus on. The key is to know how to use the nutritional label to help make healthy food choices. We talked about how labels can be deceiving.  We looked at serving sizes and compared different food items.  The class went into the home ec kitchen for a serving size demo. The students had to demonstrate what they thought one serving size would be of each ingredient by itself. The ingredients consisted of corn chex cereal, cheerios cereal, honey roasted peanuts, almonds and peanut m&ms. The students in the class demonstrated serving sizes by using measuring utensils. This is what the students found out for one serving size for each ingredient. Corn chex cereal is 1 1/4 cup, cheerios cereal is 1 1/2 cup, honey roasted peanuts is 1/4 cup, almonds is 1/4 cup, and a large bag of peanut m&ms is equal to 1 oz or 12 pieces. Once we figured out the serving sizes for each ingredient then the students combined all the ingredients and made a healthy snack mix.
