Nonrenewable and Renewable Resources

April 26, 2024

In Mrs. Randle’s science class the sixth graders have been learning about the advantages and disadvantages of nonrenewable and renewable resources. The students studied coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear power for the nonrenewable resources. For renewable resources the students focused on biofuels, geothermal power, hydroelectric power, solar power, and wind power. In the library, Mrs. Westerman taught the students about plagiarism and how to find reputable information. Many reference books were brought back to Mrs. Randle’s room for the students to start working on a research paper that they would be writing with Ms. Samuels. In Randle's room the students were taught how to write an outline, paraphrase the information, and cite their sources. Then they took their outlines to their writing class with Ms. Samuels and started working on composing their persuasive paper. The students had to debate whether one should choose nonrenewable or renewable resources.

After all their hard work the students will be treated to a field trip at the end of April. They will be going to the El Dorado Oil Museum and the Beaumont Wind Farm to experience hands-on information, dig deep into what they have learned.
