Don't Drive Distracted

On Wednesday, April 3, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) put together an activity called “Officer Bad News” to demonstrate the disastrous results of distracted driving.
Every 16 minutes the Student Resouce Officer, Mike Miles, would pull a student. Each student was given special effects makeup, bandages, and/or, a sling to give them the appearance of being injured. Their “injuries” we consistent with possible distracted driving wreck scenarios. Each student represents 4 children and wore a lanyard saying so, as every 4 minutes a child is injured in a car crash in the state of Kansas. When the students returned to class, they were asked to tell the class the story of what happened to them.
As the day progressed more and more students appeared injured, this helped students understand just how pervasive this problem is. To further drive this home there was an announcement telling students to look around and quadruple the number of their peers that they see injured as that is a visual representation of how many children were injured in that time. Students were reminded of the importance of being safe drivers by paying attention to their surroundings, wearing their seatbelt, and not driving distracted.
