Applying Geometry to Real Life
August 24, 2018
The students in Mrs. Bitler’s Geometry classes used their math skills and some rudimentary tools to become building inspectors. The goal was to determine if the ramp outside the southeast door of EJSHS meets the guidelines set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The students were given a checklist that included questions about the ramp, curb cutouts, landings, and railings. The challenge was to use a homemade plumb bob, a piece of cardboard, and a yardstick to determine the slope of the ramp. The consensus was that the ramp does not meet the guidelines, but since it isn’t the primary entrance to the school, this is not an issue.
